A few kilometres south of Thrikaripur town, on the road towards Payyanur, stands the ancient temple of Chakrapani – Vishnu as the bearer of the discus. The four-armed idol is believed to have been consecrated by Parasurama, and the temple is one of the few shrines of northern Kerala with inscriptions in Tamil, which date its rebuilding to the thirteenth century. Beside it lies a large lotus pond, which tradition links to the story of Gajendra, the elephant saved from the crocodile by Vishnu's chakra.
The temple is a quiet, rural one for most of the year, with Ganapathi, Sastha and Durga as its attendant deities. It comes alive for its seven-day festival, when the deity goes out in procession on an elephant and devotees bathe in the lotus pond, whose water is believed to heal diseases of the skin.
Tradition says that Parasurama himself installed the idol here as the destroyer of enemies, and the temple is counted among the old Vishnu shrines of Malabar. The most loved legend is that of Gajendra Moksha: a Pandya king, cursed to be born as the elephant Gajendra, was seized by a crocodile while bathing in a lotus pond and cried out to Vishnu, who came on Garuda and cut the crocodile down with his discus, freeing both from their curses. Devotees of Thrikaripur place that pond here and believe that the Lord who saved Gajendra will come to their aid in times of trouble. Another tradition tells that the saint Vilwamangalam sang here on the advice of Guruvayurappan.
The temple's real age is unknown, but Tamil inscriptions on the walls of the sanctum and the enclosure record that it was rebuilt in the Malayalam year 410, on the 27th of Makaram – that is, in 1235 CE. Historians have pointed to the Sanskrit-laden Tamil of these inscriptions as evidence of early Vaishnava worship in northern Kerala. Local memory also holds that when Tipu Sultan's army laid waste to many temples of north Malabar in the eighteenth century, it never reached this one; one story says a herd of elephants drove the soldiers away.
In recent years the aged sanctum was rebuilt with donations from devotees, and work was completed in 2012. The two ponds – the lotus pond used for the festival bath and a larger one across the road – are older than any surviving record, though their stone steps and banks have suffered from neglect. The temple is now administered under the Malabar Devaswom Board.
